Building the Model
A model of a magazine is a data file organized into data blocks
that make it easy to see what assumptions were used. Each data block represents
a particular aspect of the plan – such as Single Copy Sales – and you can
easily find the data you are looking for with a few mouse clicks.

The data blocks look and feel like a spreadsheet, including the
ability to enter formulas in numeric fields, but they’re not. Spreadsheets
cannot do the intricate calculations needed to make accurate projections of
subscription renewals. The MPMW is a computer program written in optimized
Microsoft C so it can do those very detailed calculations, and do them fast.
The data blocks are dynamic and customizable. You can add lines, change
headings, set the column widths and number of decimal places, and hide columns
and data blocks you don’t need. Because the MPMW is a program you can’t
accidentally change the computations, but there is a data block you can use to
tell it to do custom calculations you may need for your reports.
You can have up to 999 sources. Adding a new subscription source is as simple
as adding a new set of data blocks, and there is a special dialog box to do it
for you. In a few seconds.
You set the projection period – up to 999 months or weeks. And
you can change it just by entering a new start date or end date.
Projection Start Date |
01/91 |
Projection End Date |
12/98 |
Most of the subscription data you need for the data blocks is available from
your fulfillment reports. All you have to do is project new subscription source
production and any changes in sub prices and renewal percentages. Upload your
expire from a file provided by most fulfillment houses and away you go.
When your model is built you can do source evaluations over time using any of
the three accepted methods, with or without considering the cost of money.
